MBBR process originated in the 1990s, and was introduced into China in 2000. The initial type of carriers are spherical, but the related engineering parameters cannot be controlled, which led to many failure cases. In 2008, the outbreak of blue-green algae in Taihu Lake made people realize the importance of process upgrading in sewage treatment plants, and it also gave MBBR a chance to develop. With the engineering difficulties being solved, MBBR has shown good advantages in load-raising and capacity-expanding in sewage treatment plants for a period of time.

Qingdao SPRING was founded in 2006. From 2006 to 2008, it was the first stage of the company to develop MBBR, mainly to ensure the success of hydraulics.
